The epidemic

The gap nobody is watching.

Gambling disorder has no blood test, no scan, and almost no screening. Here is the real data on the gap, and why it hits young adults hardest.

8.9 yrs

Mean time between when gambling disorder starts and when someone gets treatment for it, longer than the same gap for OCD.

CNS Spectrums, peer-reviewed study, n=298

15%

Of US adults have ever been asked about their gambling by a doctor. Nothing is screening for this.

Harris Poll for NCPG, 2026

73%

Of people contacting the national gambling helpline cite financial stress. It's the single most common reason people finally reach out.

National Problem Gambling Helpline, 2025

~6%

Of US college students are estimated to have a gambling problem, roughly double the adult national rate.

National Council on Problem Gambling (NCPG)

60%

Of 18 to 22 year olds report having bet on sports, most of it through a phone, not a casino.

NCAA membership survey, 2023

19.2%

Of pathological gamblers have filed for bankruptcy, versus 5.5% of low-risk gamblers. Almost a 4x gap.

Why almost nobody catches it early

Every other major addiction has some objective marker a clinician can check. Gambling disorder doesn't. Diagnosis still runs on self-report, to a doctor who almost never asks in the first place. Concealment is part of the disorder's own clinical definition, so the person best positioned to notice it early is structurally the last one to say so. The 8.9-year gap above is what that produces: not a fast crisis, but a slow one nobody is positioned to see.

It's a campus problem now, not an adult one

Legal sports betting expanded onto phones, not into casinos, and 18 to 24 year olds have the highest problem-gambling rate of any age group tracked. Six in ten college-age adults report having bet on sports at all, and the college problem-gambling rate runs roughly double the general adult population. This isn't a fringe campus risk. It's the age band where the behavior is most normalized and least screened for.

The money moves before anything else does

Bankruptcy research on pathological gamblers shows the financial damage compounding long before a crisis becomes visible any other way. Filings run nearly four times higher than for low-risk gamblers, and UCLA Anderson research found personal bankruptcies rose 28% from 2018 to 2023 in states that legalized sports betting. A bank feed doesn't require anyone to self-report, and it doesn't wait 8.9 years to notice a pattern. That's the entire premise GuardRail is built on.
